The Israeli municipality intends to approve the construction of thousands of housing units in settlements in Occupied Jerusalem and beyond the green line in the coming days in response to the recent UN Security Council resolution calling for ending settlement activities.
According to Israel Hayom newspaper, the Israeli district planning and building committee in Occupied Jerusalem will convene on Wednesday to discuss the construction of 5,600 housing units in east of the city and beyond the green line.
2,600 of these intended units will be built in the Gilo settlement, 2,600 others in the Givat Hamatos settlement, and 400 in the Shlomo settlement, the newspaper said.
Head of the district committee Meir Turgeman, who is also deputy chief of the Jerusalem municipality, told Israel Hayom that Israel would not allow the UN to dictate its moves in Jerusalem.
"We remain unfazed by the UN vote, or by any other party that tries to dictate what we do in Jerusalem. I hope the Israeli government and the new US administration will support us so we can make up for the lack [of construction] during the eight years of the Obama administration," he said.
The Israeli municipal authorities in Jerusalem had already threatened, following Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, to activate dozens of frozen plans to build housing units in the occupied Palestinian territories.
However, the resolution that was adopted a few days ago by the UN Security Council on Israel’s settlements provoked the right-wing Israeli government into flagrantly defying the international community by confirming intents to launch a frenzied settlement construction campaign that would torpedo any iota of chance for the Palestinians to establish their future
